I received literature and verbal explanations on the risks from the doctor and had to have a vocal cord check prior to surgery. Not that the risk should stop anyone going through with surgery. Has your doctor seen you yet to ask? And don't smack yourself with the newspaper, smack the doctor because he didn't inform you. It's probably a temporary thing. I couldn't feel any sensation up to my ears for almost a day when I woke up (again normal). Then I had my hands falling asleep because the surgery usually affects calcium levels, so I had to take calcium supplements and have a weekly blood test (and it's so hard to find my veins too) for 3 weeks. Just give it time.
And consider yourself lucky you didn't become a research poster girl like me because they used the new 'keyhole' cut technique for my first surgery/biopsy. During my 3 months post surgery followup, I was sitting in the waiting room looking at a display stand and didn't even recognize that it was about me (I had my pic taken as I sat up on the gurney with the cap on - only Gale can get away with wearing that thing). Of course there were also the obligatory surgery photos but they didn't show my face thank god. It was only when the doctor pointed it out that he hoped I didn't mind seeing it that I had the *doh* moment. And I thought passport/driver's licence photos were bad *lol*.
