The weirdest thing happened today...

I was driving back from exercising at lunch, to get an Iced Tea (no syrup, no water, lite ice - LOL!) at Starbucks.  I would normally listen to my Spanish lessons on my iPod (since I listen to them when I walk), but for some reason I turned on the radio.  And normally, when I turn on the radio, I tune to the local talk radio because it has traffic reports every 10 minutes.  Not because I need them, but because when I was working 70 miles away, I was obsessed with them.  And for some reason I need to know the traffic flow patterns of the area, now.  Pavlovian?  Maybe.  Anyway...

I occasionally listen to the Progressive Radio station, Air America.  And for some reason, on that short trip to Starbucks from the park, I turned it on.   I wasn't really paying attention, it was just background noise.  And then something made my ears perk up.

The person on the radio sounded familiar.  Very familiar.  I was racking my brain, trying to think of who it was.  And then it came to me.

It was MY FATHER!!!!  I felt like one of those little penguins, who hears it's parents voice, and knows it instantly.

No, wait, that can't be right!  My dad is staying at the ranch, and he listens to the radio... and calls in?  He is a big talker, but... No way.  So I listened more.  And nothing convinced me that it wasn't him.  I tried to get the SO on the phone, to see what he thought, but he was away from his desk.  So I kept listening, even though it was going to make me late back from lunch.

At the end, when Ed Shultz ended the call?  He said, "Goodbye, ****," which is my father's name.  I screamed in the car, because I was so amazed!

But maybe I was wrong.  So I called him.

Turns out, he had recorded it earlier, for their first broadcast, but I was catching a replay of it.

How freaky is it that I acted out of character, and just happened to turn on the radio at the exact time my father was on a national progressive talk show?

Verrrrrrrrrrrrry...

That is insane!!! But really neat at the same time. What was he talking about?

He was talking about global warming, and the cyclical nature of CO2 emissions (I think). And about some Russian researcher from years ago who uncovered other evidence of it, I think. I was more listening to the cadence of the voice, because I was trying to convince myself that I was right, rather than what he was saying.

I've done things like that. It freaks out the people around me more than it does me at this point. I'll be humming or talking about a song, get in the car, turn on the radio, and that song will be on. And I'm not talking about the popular it song they play every 5 minutes. It can be any song. I've had it happen and then changed the station and it's playing again. My mother calls me a witch. :D

Don't you think the Universe brings you to those "one-off" things? Like reading a part of the newspaper that you NEVER read and seeing story about your best friend from high school?

Or tuning in to progressive talk radio and HEARING YOUR FATHER. That is too, too fucking wierd.

And wonderful. To have a dad progressive enough to be ralking on progressive radio.

I think we have a sort of inner homing device akin to intuition when it comes to the people we are closest to. That said, whenever I know "something's up" with a person I'm close to it still sends a chill up my spine.

Oh, I think that is quite wonderful, you obviously have a very close connection to your father and some innate intuition caused you to tune into that radio station at that time.

Very creepy, but great too, I think.
