Not to scare you, but my sister lost one of her cats this way. Visiting kids, opened door, cat out, cat defunct in the road. And the parents, frankly, didn't think the kids did anything at all, even though they were told NOT to let any animals outside. They did anyway. And they were around 7 or 8, old enough to know better, you'd think. My sister is no longer friends with these people, but it's too late for the poor cat!
My 9 year old niece knows not to let any animals out, but she lives there and knows she doesn't want them hurt or lost. Strange kids? I wouldn't trust them at all. Maybe that's my paranoia, but I wouldn't.
