He thinks signs would be insulting, like "Don't Let the Cats Out!"

But on more discussion, "maybe a happy little kitty picture with the words 'Look Out for Cats!." ?? I think it's more effective if it's to the point.

You could always do both. Tell them when they get there, and then put the signs up as a reminder. A picture of a cat with "Please look out for our cats" at kid height wouldn't be insulting. That way the parents know it's a reminder for the kids and not necessarily for them.
