Aren't onions amazing?

I just opened the fridge for another drink, and noticed that the white onion (which was cut a bit over 1/2 way through) was trying to sprout! There was only a mere nugget of the center part left, it was over 1/2 gone... yet still it presevered, never giving up. And that made me think...
There are so many types of people in this world. There are those that flare brightly and go out with a bang (James Dean, Hunter S. Thompson), and those that hold on forever, fighting until their light finally flickers out.
And which will I be?
My family history is varied. One grandmother was definitely the second type. She held on through multiple strokes until she finally stopped eating (and was so far out of it...). The other had a stroke (larger), and then died 10 days later. Grandfathers: one lingered for a long time with Parkinson's, the other with emphysema. So I think I might be (at the core) in the latter group. And what does that mean for me?
I have no children, no one to care about me when I'm old. I'll be shuttled off to nursing homes, where I'll become a silent (or not so silent) wraith haunting the halls.
Wow, this has turned maudlin. Welcome to my (sometimes too introspective) head. I'll go now.
P.S. Sorry for the overly corny lj-cut!
ETA: I've only posted 9 times... LOL! And I'm off tomorrow...
*eeeeek* shouts the fandom!
