Has anyone used the GIMP for making icons?

I'm trying a free program, as I'm not working for a while.

I'd like to know who I can call on for advice...

icon_tutorial has some tutorials for GIMP in memories & I think there is a GIMP community on LJ.

Thanks! I was trying to figure out which graphics program to get to make icons, but since they were all a bit spendy, I thought I'd try the free program first. Plus, if I get really into it, and find I can't do what I want, then I'll get the $$ ones.

I bought PSP8 becauseI knew I really just wanted it to make icons & there was a sale going on. I think after all was said and done I paid $39 or $49., but that was by buying it on sale with a few rebates and coupons. JASC used to offer free 30 day trials of PSP, not sure if they still do.

Have you ever tried photoimpact? You can download a free trial from download.com. I ended up buying it (only 20 bucks) and use it allllll the time. I've made icons and my current mood theme with it.

They still offer free trials (not sure how long), but I want to wait to try it until I know I'll have the time to play with it. If everything goes well with my recovery, I might get it during my second week of recovery, and play with it then. If I'm not up to it, then I'll wait a bit.

I'm all for free trials! It's gotten me to purchase many things... and helped keep me from making bad $$ mistakes, too.
