Has anyone used the GIMP for making icons?

I'm trying a free program, as I'm not working for a while.

I'd like to know who I can call on for advice...

[livejournal.com profile] icon_tutorial has some tutorials for GIMP in memories & I think there is a GIMP community on LJ.

Have you ever tried photoimpact? You can download a free trial from download.com. I ended up buying it (only 20 bucks) and use it allllll the time. I've made icons and my current mood theme with it.
