I recently (in the last two weeks), have become a fish mom, with 4 zebra danios, & 2 Betta's (one normal, one crowned). And since this is new to me, I have some questions.

1) Can you put a Betta in with Danio's? I know you can't put two Betta's together, and the two I had used to flare at each other through their divided tank (before I put them in two different tanks). It would be nice if I could put my usually happy one in the bigger tank, with the Danio's.

2) How do Betta's adapt to circulating water? I know they are normally in still water, but the guy at PetsMart said that they would get used to it. But my always happy one seemed out of it today... but that could have been because his little twin tank was dirty, and I had to chase him all over town with the net to get him out to clean it.

3) I like the look of colored glass in the bottom, but I read somewhere that the reflecting light can irritate the fish. Um, what do irritated fish do? And is it really bad for them? Because I like the bigger bits, and I like the shiny part, too.

The 4 Zebra Danio's inside are very happy to have 5 times the space they've been living in for the past 2 weeks. Let's hope it doesn't become too dirty, too soon.

The problem is bettas is that they have those lovely flowing fins. Fins that whisper nip me, nip meeeee to other fish. Danios are one type of fish that tend to be fin nippers, especially in close quarters.

As for circulating water, if it's a gentle circulation with at least one relatively still corner it can retreat to, a betta will be fine.

speak from experience of having betta's i definitely wouldn't put em n w/ another type of fish since u don't know what they might do. and anytime they see their reflection the puff up really huge. its fun 2 watch the first time but then u don't really wanna piss off ur own fish.

Dano's are fin nippers I wouldn't put the Betta's in with them. As for water circulation, as long as it is gentle I don't see a problem.

Your tank is pretty. We just took down our 90 gallon one. It was empty and we just let it go. I needed the room anyway. Enjoy your fish. Watching them is very relaxing.

From previous experience, it's not a good idea to put Betta's in a tank that small with other fish.

I have that same exact 5 gallon tank actually.

What fish do you have in it?

I really want a pearlscale goldfish (see icon), but I need a much bigger tank. And the only ones I can find right now are at Walmart, and I don't know how healthy they are, because most of them seem to float... or maybe the oxygen level was just too low for them. I don't know...

I have a few of the small angelfish in it now. My Betta died a few months ago, but I had him in the tank with them for about a day and saw that it wasn't going to work out because the angel's kept wanting to pick at his fins. I also used to have Danio's and they would do the same thing to a different Betta that I had, so both Betta's ended up with their own tanks.

I have my beta in a 10 gallon tank with some mollies. I was told that the beta won't hurt other types of fish as long as they aren't aggressive towards the beta. Mollies aren't nippers, so they are fine together. I have no idea how aggressive Danios are though, so maybe ask at a local pet store.
