I paid for a domain name, because I wanted a website. But I have zero knowledge of how to do it. I tried making a page in Word, and saving it as a Webpage, which worked semi-OK (the pic didn't go).

But I was told the links to DL worked, but the results were not readable.

As you can see, I need to create a website, and have no idea how.

Can anyone recommend a program to buy? Or for free would be better, but I'm an amateur. But I DO learn very quickly, and don't necessarily need the easiest thing out there if it costs an arm & a leg.

I had someone recommend Front Page, which cost like $180 to DL off the internet. But another friend said it sucked.

So help me, website guru's out there.

Please?

I've never used a program for doing html so I can't help there. But if you're interested in learning how to handcode, I can recommend http://webmonkey.com and notepad as good tools of the trade. Webmonkey has some of the best tutorials out there and they helped me learn frames and lots of other nifty things. It also helps to look at the source code of websites when you see things you like and want to try. It takes a lot of patience to learn how to do it all, though.

About FrontPage:

FrontPage is quite simply software to use and learn.

There is three different views:

1. view: is like Word - you see all the time what you do in there
2. view: is the HTML view - so in case you want to write HTML you can do it also, and this can be used also for learning HTML.
3. view: is preview - the result of the page what you have done and how does it look in the browser.

There must be plenty of guides if you want to learn use that software. I use this sometimes and I think it's quite handy. And it's Microsoft standard software so there are commands which you have already learned from using Word.

I'm a webdesigner.. and i don't recommend Front Page either..

I don't use editors myself when i work on things, but i have used Dreamweaver in classes and such, and i highly recommend it. I write my own code in just Notepad, a code warrior here :)

As for Tutorials and stuff try www.lissaexplains.com it is a kids help site for HTML, but its a great site, tells you how to do almost anything, and gives examples, and explains each thing in detail.

Hiya. =)

I wish I could use a program to design webpages. I keep thinking it will be easier to make sites that way, but whenever I have tried to use a program I end up really confused and go back to coding by hand in Notepad. I'm not that great at it either since I always forget code and have to look it up again, but I get by.

Here's a couple of other places you can look to learn basic html:
http://htmlgoodies.com/
http://www.htmlbasix.com/ (also has a code generator for some basic things, good way to study code)

A place to ask questions and look at answers:

I hate FrontPage, but it's all right for doing basic stuff. If you know enough about HTML to get by, you can take out a lot of the extraneous code in the HTML view and fix links and size pictures and stuff, and it's better. It makes for a good starter webbuilder.

Frontpage really is the work of the devil, it creates bad code, and frequently encourages people to create pages that are really only functional in IE.

Dreamweaver is a great program but is $$$$ - for something free, and with similar functionality (especially for a beginner who doesn't need all the bells and whistles) I would reccomend 1st Page 2000 you can download it for free here:http://www.evrsoft.com/ it has a certain amount of wysiwyg but also will show you the code it generates, and makes it easy to edit/code by hand as well.

For learning HTML there are tons of sites - http://www.davesite.com has a great interactive tutorial that is very good at breaking down the basics and teaching them. When I learned HTML about 8 years ago, I used this site. He also has some tutorials for .css and for javascript.

For a book, I would reccomend HTML For the World Wide Web by Elizabeth Castro http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0201696967/qid=1083322172/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-4105547-9228956?v=glance&s=books

If you're going to go with design software I'd go with dreamweaver.

The thing to remember and do right now is plan. Know what your site structure and folder hierarchy is going to be. Nothing makes site design more difficult than winging it.

If you're looking for a price of "free", Netscape comes with Netscape composer, which is what I used for a long time.

I haven't used it in a couple of revisions, so I don't know how well it still works, but when I did, it was simple to use and didn't throw in extra stupid code like FrontPage will.

And plus: Free.

one addition to my previous post

ok.. people here seem really dislike FrontPage... but IMHO it is still quite handy and it's not hard to use. I sometimes use it when I need to do quick layout for the webpage. just for testing you know.... yeah FrontPage does it own things.. but I don't understand that people so much hates that software... I mean you are not planning to be a web designer after all.. you just need software which is easy to use and quick to learn.. and if you start to study the HTML - you can use this software as well.. anyway.. take your time and study different options, I'm sure you'll find something which fits to your needs.
