Well, I'm screwed.

Someone must have given out my website to non-LJ users, because everything was fine when I was gone, until last night. Then, somehow, my use spiked up to 8 gb/day (I only get 5 gb/day) - and the site is gone.

Hopefully, I'll get it back. If not, hope you all enjoyed it while it lasted. That was an expensive trip.

And thanks again to whoever gave out the site on the net. Thanks a lot.

ETA: My site will be back up by midnight (according to the host) - but I'm going to have to disable it for a while until I can figure out how to protect it. I'll post when it's available again.

If I go over alloted usage 3 times, then it's gone. So I've got one strike against me already.

Someone probably direct linked your songs or played them in real time (they did the same thing with my clips...bastards), you could zip all the files, so people will *have* to right click to download them...

Yeah, I just have to figure out how to do that. I'm also thinking of trying to figure out how to password protect them somehow.

I'm not sure if someone direct linked to them - but I did get over 5,300 requests in 6 days... I think someone posted it on the web (instead of keeping it in LJ land). But I could be wrong.

I'll post here when it's back up, but I'll probably have to disable it for a while to fix the problem.

You can password protect a directory. Or even the zip files themselves.

How? I'd love to know how to do it. That way, I can change it easily if things get too crazy, instead of having to change directory names.

depends on how your webtools from your webhost are designed - but setting up a .htaccess directory is frequently an option - also zipping them is easy. Download a demo of WinRar, or Winzip (assuming you are on pc) and the softwares can handle all kinds of compressed archiving.

I tried making a WinRAR file of a song, figuring it would compress it... but it was still the same size afterwards.

Or do I have a faulty idea of what zipping a file does?

nope - music files in mp3 format are fairly compressed already so it won't save you that way - but zipping it will keep people from streaming the files off your site (which I think uses more bandwidth)- and playing them that way more than once - even worse. If you zip it first - they have to download, unzip and play. Also I might recommend the .zip format, as it is more common. Also you will probably get more casual downloaders - the more you make them work for it, the less likely they are to abuse it (imho).

Hm... I spent 2 days uploading (literally 2 days!) - so I'll try the password protect thing first, and change the password as needed. If I have time, I'll zip & reupload the files. I prefer .rar files (as I have that program), but I can probably figure out how to do .zip files, even though I've never done it before. But I set up a website in 2 days with no lessons (but a lot of on-line help from LJ friends) - so I should be able to do it.

well I am totally willing help you with whatever you need - but Winrar should be able to make .zip files as well as rar files.
